Roller Screed
Enviro-Crete Inc. utilizes a hydrolically driven screed to strike off the first pass of pervious concrete placement. The roller is designed to cut, screed, and compact the pervious concrete all In one pass. The screed utilized by Enviro-Crete Inc. was developed by Craftsman Dennis Collins. Nicknamed “Ronnie” this specially designed screed is now available for sale through perviousplus.com, tools section. This roller has been proclaimed by many placement experts as the best screed roller in the industry.

Cross Rolling
In the early days of pervious concrete placement. It was standard practice to cross roll over the top of the cure plastic. That was because early mix designs were very unstable and it was critical to get the plastic over the pervious concrete as quickly as possible, no less than 20 minutes after it was on the ground. Enviro-Crete Inc. was one of the first companies in the country to cross roll before the plastic cure was in place. This technique enabled us to visually see and eliminate lines left from the screed roller. This was made possible from special pervious concrete additives like Pervious Plus tm. Pervious Plus extends the working life of the mix so that there is adequate working time with the mix. This new technique was a key development in the development of Perfect Pervious … Every Time!. This technique is now a standard procedure in the industry.

Edging
Edging is an important process for the prevention of raveling along any edge of a placement. The policy at Enviro-Crete Inc. is that all edges get edged with a steel edge tool. This is one technique that is similar to the placement of regular concrete. The rule of thumb for the size of radius is the larger the rock the larger the radius that can be used. Placement experience will help with your choice of size of radius vs. size of rock in the mix.

Jointing
With any concrete, jointing is the practice of having concrete crack in strategic locations. This old saying does apply to pervious concrete, “Concrete will get hard and it will crack.” Follow ACI flatwork rules when determining the locations and depth of your joints. We recommend that you apply joints at the time of pour rather than saw cut the joints in at a latter date. Our experience has been that the saw cutting surfaces have already cracked by the time you can come back seven days later remove the plastic and apply the saw cut.
When we have jointed during placement we have not experienced any cracking of the areas. Pervious concrete is jointed using what we call a “pizza cutter.” This tool cuts a joint to approximately 1/3 the depth of the pervious and the rolling prevents ripping the edges of the joints as they are being installed.

Curing
Curing may be the most critical phase of the pervious concrete placement process. Using standard mix designs six mil. (6) plastic is spread on top of the poured and finished areas. The plastic should be spread before the surface of the pervious concrete loses its metalic sheen. The old rule of thumb was 20 minutes, but with specialty additives like Pervious Plus tm, the time can be extended to 30-40 minutes. Make sure that there is adequate over lapping of the plastic along the edges and seams. We recommend no less than one (1) foot of overlapping. Make sure that the edges and seams are properly fastened and that no air is getting under the plastic that could compromise the edges and surfaces. There are new additives coming onto the market that will be eliminating the need for any cure plastic. That will really make pervious concrete that much easier to place and will reduce an enormous amount of risk for the contractors. Until then however, this remains the single most important process for the success of any pervious concrete placement .

Decorative Joints
Decorative jointing is a one way of making pervious concrete more visually pleasing. However you must use extreme caution that you have enough man power to install the joints quickly enough before it is necessary to cover the pervious concrete with the cure plastic.
